The Truth Pre Amp !
Oct 5th, 2009, 9:01am

That's what I will call it. "It" is a pre amp. It is unlike anything I have seen. Thanks to Buzz I started investigating LDR's. I did not like what I was seeing for a lot of reasons I can't divulge right now. I thought to myself, "self, there has to be a better way". And then the green LED in my brain went on and off and on and off and on.........I'd be dangerous if I actually "knew something". I'm not an engineer, but I am a thinker.

Volume is controlled by a single green LED. Channel matching is done with good old "redneck engineering". Which may explain why I didn't see anything like it in my research.

I really don't want to say too much except it's good, really, really good.

It can drive 30 foot cables on either end (or both ends) with ease.....it cares not what the impedance of any device attached to (in or out) it is.

It is insanely dynamic sounding. Silky smooth...........

It is........"The Truth".

Designing a loudspeaker is very easy, building one that actually sounds good is much harder.

Ed, don't tease. All about this please, and start at the beginning, and don't quit typing till you are at the end including the sound and the price.

Perhaps you would like to send one out to perhaps...  a CARINA owner, to determine how synergistic it would be with that type of amplifier. If so I know someone who could help you with your audition.  Wink  Many others here too who could do the same and likely closer physically than me.  I know a few of them have a GG today, so would be interested to know what it does in comparison. I had always wondered about a GG, but done nothing yet.

Does "the truth" have a remote?

Thanks so much.

Hey guys,
Before anyone thinks my naming it "The Truth" has a hint of arrogance about it (like many did with the name "The Horns") let me explain.....

I threw it together (see pics) and it worked! Crazy good, it was. So I listened a while and was pretty much bowled over so I called Helen to come listen.

She came in and sat down.....a few minutes later she said "wow...it does  sound good" (the system). My reply......"ain't that the truth".

And there you go.................

First pic is the LDR control....nothing to be seen...it's covered in black goop to shield it from light....it uses discrete components.

Second pic is the power supply (barely visible) and the other two boards that make the thing up. It sounded GREAT hobbled together, btw.

The third is the finished thing in a box I had lying around.

The next step is to build it all on one board and make it look pretty.

More as it develops............

Ed

Is there any gain or should I know this if I read more carefully?

I have a Deware unity gain preamp driving a Decware SE84c and Horns of course. I have been told that a little gain will help.

Thanks
Tom

now Ed,  you know you can't make it too pretty,  or it wouldn't really be "the Truth"     Wink
